Ingredients

For the onions
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 yellow onions large, about 1 1/2 pounds, thinly sliced
For the dip
  • 1.5 cup sour cream
  • 0.5 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper

Equipment

  • 1 10-inch skillet

Method

Make the onions
  1. Melt the butter with the olive oil in a 10-inch skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 35 to 45 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until the onions are very soft and deep golden brown; lower the heat if they begin to scorch.
  4. Transfer the onions to a plate or shallow bowl.
  5. Cool completely, about 20 minutes.
Make the dip
  1. In a medium bowl, stir together the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, kosher salt, and black pepper.
  2. Stir in the cooled onions.
  3. Cover the dip.
  4. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

Notes

For the best texture, let the onions cool completely before mixing them into the dip. Store covered in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days; freezing is not recommended because the sour cream can separate. For a lighter, tangier variation, use plain Greek yogurt in place of the sour cream.
