Ingredients

For the bacon topping
  • 8 bacon slices, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
For the green beans
  • 3 can (14.5 oz) green beans cut, drained
For the brown sugar glaze
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.33 cup brown sugar packed light
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 0.25 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper

Equipment

  • 1 12-inch skillet
  • 1 9x13-inch baking dish

Method

Cook the bacon topping
  1. Cook the bacon in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat for 8–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until crisp.
  2. Transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
Prepare the green beans
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  3. Spread the drained green beans in the dish.
Make the glaze
  1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.
  2. Stir in the brown sugar, soy sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper for 2–3 minutes, until smooth.
Assemble and bake
  1. Pour the glaze over the green beans and stir gently to coat.
  2. Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, until bubbling around the edges.
  3. Scatter the crisp bacon over the beans.
  4. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Drain the canned green beans well so the glaze stays concentrated. Refrigerate leftovers for 3–4 days; freezing is not recommended because the beans can turn soft. For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free tamari in place of soy sauce.
